California's Hidden Gems: The Venice Canals

Marina Staff are great but tug and barge traffic very challenging. Yes, Schaefer's Canal House has a kids menu, view their kids menu on Sirved. Great combo playing that did not blast your ears.

The under-populated Short Line was spared only because they couldn’t raise enough funds via property assessments. The Venice Canals are one of the city’s quirkiest neighborhoods as well as a picturesque reminder of the grandiose beginnings of Southern California as a tourist destination. We arrived late but they stuck around to help us tie up and made suggestions for the best fendering arrangements.

Comfort food,

During the season, you will find live music and events at The Lighthouse Bar on site. Additionally, the restaurant has beautiful deck seating that overlooks the water, with both indoor and outdoor dining options available. Filled with a wide variety of seafood specialties and casual bites, there is a taste here that will please any pallet. The restaurant does have special menus for holidays, as well as an amazing event space, perfect for hosting your next big shindig. The beautiful veranda that overlooks the creek gives guests a quiet spot to catch up on some serious R&R.

Hours

Though the Venice Canals in Los Angeles were beloved in their hayday, as cars became more popular, Venice of America became less practical. By 1929, Venice was absorbed into Los Angeles, and the California Supreme Court ruled to fill in Kinney’s canals to create roadways. If you’ve only been to the Venice Beach Boardwalk, you probably wonder how this neighborhood in Los Angeles has any association with the famous tourist destination in Italy. Venice, Italy, has miles of canals sweeping through the heart of the city, romantic gondola rides, and pedestrian walkways. That was the inspiration for Abbot Kinney's Venice of America. We are docked from May1st to Oct31st on the transit floating docks.

Great experience on the C and D canal. Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May. In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant.

Very good prices at the dock and restaurant. Tom was expert on getting us secured in swift currents. On site restaurant very convenient. Convenient spot to stop with a restaurant at your door. There are no shower facilities and the bathrooms are serviceable.

Overall a nice one night stop. Be prepared and time your canal transit and docking based on tides. Check AIS for commercial traffic before departing the dock. Note that the dock has no cleats to which you can tie, you'll need to throw a clove hitch or something around the pilings. The dock hands are quite good about helping with line handling.

Much enjoyed the large bar/restaurant - good food and service. This is a restaurant with a dock that accepts transients, not a true marina. Only docking for sailboats is along the canal bulkhead, but wake from passing boats was less than feared, since Chesapeake City is a "no wake" zone. Note that they have fuel (gas and diesel), but no other amenities for transients (no pump-out/showers/laundry/after-hours toilets etc.).

The available amenities of the docks, which are located outside of a restaurant and bar, are noted on the Snag-A-Slip profile. The marina does offer restrooms, but a bath house is not an available amenity. We had a really good experience here.

Please provide your ETA, if you will be needing fuel, and direction of approach in the Notes section at checkout. Note that the marina has both fixed and floating docks on site, however the floating docks do not offer shore power. After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal.

However not a marina - mainly dockage for restaurant & bar (which we found convenient). Therefore, no dock restrooms or showers (bathrooms at restaurant). No stores of any kind nearby, although Steve offered to have staff give us a ride to a grocery store.

Staff was excellent from the time I hit the Fuel dock, until I was down the pier at my slip. Dockhands were knowledgeable and knew how to secure boat to fixed pier. Fun being on the edge of the restaurant and people eating who wanted to be more informed about boats.

The canals were a huge success, attracting visitors from all over the world. Kinney's Venice of America was a popular tourist destination, and the canals were and still are a major attraction. But Kinney’s dream for the city didn’t end there. By 1940, the deteriorated sidewalks were closed to the public. Thankfully a major ‘90s restoration project replaced them, deepened the canals, added a saltbush barrier and rebuilt the sides of the channels. The neighborhood's designation as a wildlife preserve has once again made it popular with herons, egrets, coots, pelicans, and subsequently, birders.

Steven the Dock Master was amazing. He's very knowledgeable and even washed the water marks and filled our fenders when we got fuel. Passed out leaflets with all kind of info. When we tied up on the fixed doc he was super helpful making sure we could set up our ramp to get our golden off the boat and took extra time setting up all the lines and fenders. And cracking jokes the whole time.

I believe this is the only marina in Chesapeake City that has fuel. As the price of diesel is steadily heading up theirs was $5.85 plus they give BOATUS and AGLCA discounts. There is a current, but what areas around here don't don't have a current? Since the main dockage is along a fixed dock it's fairly easy to pull up and the dockmaster is very helpful and friendly. I ate at the restaurant (nothing else around) the food is good.

Current runs strong up to 2.5 knots. Tom the Dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. He guided us in to our spot over the radio and took our lines on arrival. Great help from Dockmaster and dockhand. The Army Corp had actually closed the C&D Canal due to fog.
